In 2016, the US Department of Education reported that fewer than 600 computer science teachers were certified through state-approved certification pathways. In 2017, only 100 CS teachers graduated from pre-service teacher preparation programs. Many teachers may eventually leave the CS discipline due to recruitment into other fields or lack of support. In contrast, research affirms that teacher retention is positively affected by supportive, collaborative learning networks.
