We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Shanti’ Coaston to CSTA’s Board of Directors to fill the vacant 9-12 Teacher Representative position through June 2022.
Coaston is in her ninth year of teaching. Her special education experiences have assisted in the transition of teaching CS to all students (APCSP, Intro to Game Design, Intro to Cybersecurity, Exploring CS, and Student TechCorps) full-time. Shanti has received CS training through CSforCLE and TEALS. Her activities and recognition include: 2018-19 Shaw High School and East Cleveland City Schools Teacher of the Year, CSTA CS Honor Society Advisory Committee Member, 2019 APCSP Teacher Summit participant, Girls Who Code Facilitator, ESports Advisor, CSTA Ohio Member, 2018 CSforALL Conference attendee, Technology Integration PD provider, and the 2017 Ohio CS Curriculum Standards Writing Team, as well as a Co-Lead Mentor for new educators to the school district. She ensures that her students are exposed to college tours, career fairs, and CS competitions. Coaston believes that EVERY student, especially girls and students with disabilities, deserves to learn computer science.
The CSTA Board of Directors Nominations and Elections Committee (Dan Blier (chair), Jen Rosato, Charity Freeman, Vicky Sedgwick, Cindi Chang, and Jake Baskin) reviewed over 40 outstanding applications from the CSTA community and after difficult deliberations unanimously recommended Coaston to the full Board at the organization’s Feb. 6 meeting where she was officially appointed. As a new member, Coaston will co-lead the Board’s publications committee and also work with the full board to set the direction of the organization, provide guidance to CSTA leadership, and promote CSTA’s mission to the greater education community.
