The Maywood Center for Enriched Studies (MaCES) CSHS chapter recently participated in the first-ever Computer Science Honor Society Leadership Summit, which brought together student leaders to share their insights and experiences in the field of computer science.
The event featured a series of presentations by student leaders from different CS Honor Societies, including MaCES CSHS members Ashle, Karla, and Luis. They emphasized the importance of collaboration when organizing successful events, highlighting that other clubs can be asked to join forces and make a bigger impact together.
Matthew and Alanis shared great resources on optimizing meetings for efficiency, effectiveness, and engagement. They stressed that mobilizing members is essential to making a real impact.
Isabel and Valeria shared key takeaways on impactful CS workshops, focusing on theming, marketing, and empowering students. They emphasized that empowering students through discovery learning is key when developing a workshop to introduce computer science to the community.
The event was a huge success, with participants gaining valuable insights and inspiration from the presentations. The student leaders were able to connect and network with each other, building stronger relationships and creating opportunities for collaboration among the different CS Honor Societies.
MaCES CSHS is thrilled to have participated in the first-ever Computer Science Honor Society Leadership Summit. As a chapter, we are dedicated to advancing computer science education in our community, and this groundbreaking event was a testament to the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving that goal.
The success of the summit was due to the hard work and dedication of student leaders from different CS Honor Societies, including our very own Ashle, Karla, Luis, Matthew, Alanis, Isabel, and Valeria. We are excited to see how they will use the insights gained from the event to drive excellence, equity, and service in their respective chapters.

About the Author
Maria Camarena is a computer science teacher at Maywood Center for Enriched Studies. Her mission is to advocate for computer science opportunities in her community. In five years, she has established a computer science pathway offering CS to all 7th graders and multiple high school CS classes, including APCSP, APCSA and Data Science. Maria is a strong advocate for girls in STEM. She significantly increased the enrollment of girls in CS courses through the founding of the MaCES Girls Who Code Club and the Computer Science Honor Society, the only one in her local district. Maria also believes in connecting students with professionals of Hispanic/Latinx descent through her partnership with Nuevo Foundation because she understands that “you can’t be what you can’t see.” Her accolades include the 2020 CSTA/Infosys Teaching Excellence award and the 2022 NCWIT National Educator award.
